The Australian, 27th January 2010
THE Australian Learning and Teaching Council has been axed as the federal government cuts spending to pay for flood recovery.
Today prime minister Julia Gillard announced $2.8 billion in savings, including $88 million over four years from the ALTC, which will not be funded from January next year.
The chairman of the ALTC board, John Hay, reacted with dismay. "The Government has taken the easy option of abolishing the ALTC," he said.
"The savings to the government will be less than $22 million per annum but the damage to the higher education sector and student outcomes will be far reaching.”
ALTC chief executive Carol Nicoll said: "Without the ALTC, I am deeply concerned that important work in this area, that is central to the mission of every Australian higher education institution, will go unrecognised and unrewarded". ALTC Media Release
