ALTC exploring options for 2011
ALTC Media Release 7 February 2011
"The Australian Learning and Teaching Council is working hard to identify the way forward for its suite of programs, in the wake of the Federal Government’s recent closure announcement.
ALTC Chief Executive Dr Carol Nicoll said the organisation’s first priority is to inform the sector about which of the grants, awards, citations and fellowships programs will accept applications this year.
“We realise that many individuals and teams are midway through preparing submissions to the ALTC for project funding, fellowships, citations and award nominations. We certainly don’t wish these efforts to be in vain and ask the sector to please bear with us while we ascertain if it is still possible to run these programs in 2011,” she said.
Also being examined are the implications for funded projects that are not due to be completed until after the ALTC’s slated closure in December this year.
“Rest assured we are doing everything in our power to ensure that the incredible work carried out by recipients of ALTC funding will have an enduring legacy.”
Dr Nicoll expects to be able to advise the sector about the ALTC’s 2011 operations by the end of February...Read more

Professor Sally Kift 3 February 2011
The Joint Council of Deans has issued a statement endorsed by eight Councils of Deans – Joint declaration from the Councils of Deans: Quality Teaching is essential to deliver the Education Revolution. Text as follows: The Councils of Deans are deeply concerned that the ALTC has been axed without consultation with the higher education sector. Breaking News: ALTC - Champion of learning and teaching gets the chop
The Australian, 27th January 2010
THE Australian Learning and Teaching Council has been axed as the federal government cuts spending to pay for flood recovery.
Today prime minister Julia Gillard announced $2.8 billion in savings, including $88 million over four years from the ALTC, which will not be funded from January next year.
The chairman of the ALTC board, John Hay, reacted with dismay. "The Government has taken the easy option of abolishing the ALTC," he said.
"The savings to the government will be less than $22 million per annum but the damage to the higher education sector and student outcomes will be far reaching.”
ALTC chief executive Carol Nicoll said: "Without the ALTC, I am deeply concerned that important work in this area, that is central to the mission of every Australian higher education institution, will go unrecognised and unrewarded". ALTC Media Release
